Lindsay Smail
Artist member since 2022
Toronto, Ontario
Lindsay’s oil paintings have been described as mysterious, sensual, and lit from within. She uses thin layers of oil paint to create luminous paintings that invite the viewer into contemplation. Her distinctive work reflects a world (both inner and outer) that is nuanced, complex, and worth a closer look.
After pursuing a career in design, she decided to prioritize her own creative work and developed a rigorous studio practice. Her paintings can be found in private collections in Canada and the US. Lindsay lives and works in the woods outside Washago, Ontario.
FYI: Pickups and deliveries can be arranged through the studio near Washago, Ontario, or in downtown Toronto.
Q+A
Favourite medium
Oil paint. The colour has a richness I love.
When did you start making art, and why?
I've always made things. I started painting as a way to recharge my creative batteries. Now I paint full time, with a little graphic design on the side.
What do you listen to when you work?
I'm always looking for new music and eclectic playlists. I listen to podcasts a lot too. History and art mostly.
Beverage of choice
Tea, gin & tonic
When I'm not making art, I'm (a) ...
out paddling and swimming. Water makes everything better.
